Chapter Eleven

Outside, the patio area was empty. However, voices could be heard round the corner of the building. Angus edged as close to the corner as he could, followed by Charlotte, their backs pressed against the wall.

“We can’t blab,” one of them said. “If we do, they’ll kill us. They’re always threatening my girlfriend too.”

“They can’t kill all of us,” said the other man.

“Well, they’ll make us pay, then,” said the first man. “They’ll make sure we never play another match. You know that story in the paper a while ago? The man whose thumb got cut off in an accident? That was no accident.”

“How do you know?”

“He told me. He’d been involved with Screwball for a while and somehow, he put his foot in it. We’ll just have to do what they ask.”

“But if we do, they’ll just keep on at us. There’ll be no end to it.”

“What choice have we got? I’m not risking me or my girlfriend. Sorry, but I ain’t.”

Just as the man stopped speaking, Charlotte’s phone beeped loudly. “Shit!” she mouthed. She’d turned the sound up to hear it better in the conference room.

“Did you hear that?” one of them said. “Someone’s round the corner. They might be listening…”

Charlotte and Angus stared at each other, fear of being caught on both their faces. Then Charlotte acted on instinct. She stepped in in front of Angus, pushed herself against him, then grabbed his arms and wrapped them round her. Then she cupped his face in her hands and kissed him.
